Sometimes, money is never an easy topic to discuss with people. I can sympathize as I’ve been there myself personally. In fact, it would appear that this is many people’s hero journey when dealing with money and finances. In this article, I share a phrase that has helped to prioritize, not only, my business but my life. Remember the goal for any business is to be viable and essentially, not go broke.
Quick backstory first.
I was at a point in life where finances were crushing, making it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I was behind on multiple payments. Car notes, credit card bills, you name it. It was at the start of my entrepreneurial journey that I struggled. This was partly due to a lack of knowledge and the learning curve when going the way alone.
And with all things, honesty is always the best policy, especially when it comes to financial matters. I needed to get to a point where I can manage and bring myself back into the green. One day, I was invited to an outing with friends and simply could not afford to go.
Communicating this was not only the hardest thing for me to say but also what I needed to say openly. Thankfully, it was well-received, followed by some much-needed dark humor.

What is the power behind the phrase “I cannot afford this right now”?
Let’s take a closer look at the power of these words.
When you say ‘I’, it points to one undeniable truth; that is, YOU are in charge. The word ‘cannot’ means pause and evaluate further – like taking an extra step back before leaping forward with full force. By saying ‘afford this,’ you set up your expectations for what can be accomplished both within yourself and those around you – quite powerful if we do say so ourselves. As always, time plays its role as an ever-changing entity on our journey through life – thus why “right now” serves as such an important reminder when setting goals!

Focuses on priorities
Why is this important?
It can be difficult to admit to others on financial matters, but it’s important to be upfront about your financial limitations for several reasons. Being honest about what you can and cannot afford helps you prioritize your spending. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and overspend on things that we don’t really need or can’t afford.
By being honest with ourselves and others about what we can afford, we can make more informed decisions about where to allocate our money. This can help us avoid overspending and getting into debt, which can have serious long-term consequences.
Prevents misunderstandings
Being honest about your financial limitations can also prevent misunderstandings. If you don’t tell people that you can’t afford something, they may assume that you are willing or able to pay for it. This can lead to misunderstandings and potentially strained relationships.
By being upfront about your financial situation, you can avoid these types of misunderstandings and maintain healthy relationships with others.

Alternatives solutions
In addition, being honest about what you can’t afford allows you to seek alternative solutions. If you can’t afford something, it’s important to be upfront about it so that you can work together with others to find alternative solutions. This could involve finding a cheaper option, sharing the cost with others, or finding a way to do without it altogether.
By being open and honest about your financial limitations, you can find creative ways to get what you need without breaking the bank. Sometimes, it is better to consider this.
Promotes financial responsibility
Being honest about what you can’t afford also promotes financial responsibility. It shows that you are aware of your limits and are willing to make sacrifices in order to stay within them. This can help you build a solid foundation for your financial future and avoid financial pitfalls that can hinder your long-term success.
Finally, being honest with people about what you can’t afford can help you avoid uncomfortable situations. It can be uncomfortable to tell people that you can’t afford something, but it’s better than finding yourself in a situation where you can’t pay or have to borrow money. By being upfront about your financial limitations, you can avoid these uncomfortable situations and maintain your dignity.
